Do you need symmetrical upload?

The workloads that make upload speed the number to read on a quote, and the ones that do not.

What does symmetrical upload mean?

A symmetrical connection sends data out as fast as it pulls data in — 500 Mbps down and 500 Mbps up. Most consumer and cable plans are asymmetric, giving a large download figure and a much smaller upload one. Upload is what carries your voice calls, backups, video and file transfers.

When upload is the number that matters

  • Your phone system runs over the internet and several people are on calls at once
  • Staff run video calls with cameras on, all day, from the same office
  • Nightly backups push large amounts of data offsite
  • You send video, CAD, imaging or design files to clients
  • Someone outside the building connects in, over a VPN or to a server or a camera system

When asymmetric is perfectly fine

An office doing email, web apps, and a handful of video calls will not notice the difference. Cloud software downloads far more than it sends. If the upload figure is comfortably above what your busiest hour needs, paying several times more for symmetry buys you headroom you will never use.

How to work out what you need

  1. Count the simultaneous calls

    Allow roughly 100 Kbps per voice call, and 2 – 4 Mbps per video call with the camera on.

  2. Add your backup window

    If backups run during office hours, they compete with everything else. Moving them overnight is often cheaper than more bandwidth.

  3. Add headroom

    Size for the busiest hour, then add about 30%.

  4. Compare the upload figures, not the headline

    Two plans advertised at the same speed can differ tenfold on upload.

Symmetrical is not the same as guaranteed

Symmetry describes the shape of the speed. It says nothing about whether that speed is reserved for you. Symmetrical fiber broadband is still shared capacity sold as a maximum. If you need both symmetry and a committed rate, that is dedicated internet. See dedicated internet or broadband.
