The World Wide Web In the Beginning

On March 11, 1989, Tim Berners-Lee came up to his boss at CERN, Mike Sendall, and submitted a proposal. It had an idea for a new information management system. Mike Sendall reviewed the proposal (of which a picture copy is seen below) and wrote on the top of the paper, “Vague but exciting…” That day, Tim Berners-Lee invented something that would revolutionize the entire world for forever. His new invention is the World Wide Web that we know today.

It’s Usage Today

Today, we are only three decades into the revolutionary invention of the World Wide Web. Yet, we already cannot imagine a life without it. Many actually do not even remember a life without it. In fact, the latest two generations do not even know a life without the World Wide Web.

Almost every industry today uses the World Wide Web in one way or another. Over 4.5 billion people worldwide are internet users. In USA alone, over 93% of the adults use the web, while over three-quarters of the homes have broadband internet.

The World Wide Web Now

Today, the internet is one of the most unifying forces in the planet. It unites generations, cultures, continents, and times into one page or click or post. A trend in one country can become a trend in another country in a mere few seconds. So too can news on one side of the world already be heard about on the other.

Internet redeemed time. It created a new form of time-travel that most did not even dream of before. Communication and information, which used to take days or even months to deliver, is now sent in matters of milli-seconds.

Its Effect on Tomorrow

The World Wide Web’s power is limitless. It really is omnificent. As a result, it has the potential to make its user very powerful as well. When a user has access to the World Wide Web they have the ability to be omnipresent with live sharing. They also have the opportunity to be omniscient when they have such powerful intelligence at their fingertips.

Combining the boundless potential of the World Wide Web with the limitless mind of the human being promises a future with many more new inventions to come. The internet we know today is just the beginning of the internet that we will see tomorrow.

“Had the technology been proprietary, and in my total control, it would probably not have taken off. You can’t propose that something be a universal space and at the same time keep control of it.” – Tim Berners-Lee
